The Brain, the Body & Craniosacral Therapy: Releasing Deep Patterns of Tension

Have you ever felt like your body is holding onto something your mind can’t quite explain?

Tension in the head, emotional overwhelm, poor sleep, or a sense of disconnection can often stem from deeper patterns held within the nervous system. In craniosacral therapy we understand that the brain is not working in isolation—it is intimately connected to the body through a living system of membranes, fluid, and subtle rhythms.

Understanding the Brain Through Craniosacral & Osteopathic Science

The brain is surrounded by protective membranes called the dura mater, which form a continuous system throughout the body. One of the most important structures within this system is the tentorium cerebelli—a membrane that separates the cerebrum from the cerebellum.

These membranes are not rigid. They are responsive, mobile, and sensitive to stress, trauma, and physical strain.

Research and clinical work in osteopathy and craniosacral therapy show that restrictions in these tissues can influence:

  • The central nervous system

  • Circulation of cerebrospinal fluid

  • Hormonal and stress responses

  • Emotional regulation

When these membranes become tight—whether from injury, chronic stress, or birth trauma—the body may begin to compensate in ways that lead to discomfort or dysfunction.

How Tension Can Be Held in the Brain and Body

Over time, the body stores experiences—especially those that were overwhelming or unresolved.

This can show up as:

  • Tight dural membranes (often felt as pressure or headaches)

  • Restrictions in the tentorium (impacting nervous system balance)

  • Imbalances around the cerebellum (affecting coordination, posture, and emotional processing)

  • Patterns linked to birth trauma or past injuries

For some, these patterns have been present for years without conscious awareness.

How Craniosacral Therapy Supports Release

In a craniosacral session, we work gently with the body’s natural rhythms and the subtle movements of the cranial system.

This is not forceful manipulation.

Instead, it is a deep listening process—allowing the body to guide the release.

Through light touch, I support:

  • Softening of tight membranes

  • Release of compressive patterns

  • Improved flow of cerebrospinal fluid

  • Regulation of the autonomic nervous system

As the system begins to shift out of survival states (fight, flight, or freeze), many clients experience a sense of calm, clarity, and reconnection.

Supporting Symptoms Linked to Deep Nervous System Patterns

Craniosacral therapy may support people experiencing:

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Jaw tension and TMJ dysfunction

  • Anxiety, stress, and overwhelm

  • Sleep disturbances

  • Chronic fatigue

  • Emotional holding or difficulty processing experiences

  • Post-injury or post-surgical tension

  • Birth-related imprints (for both adults and babies)

Each session is tailored to your body’s unique story.

A Gentle, Yet Profound Approach to Healing

For many of my clients—whether you are navigating long-term stress, recovering from injury, or simply seeking a deeper connection to your body—this work offers something different.

It is subtle, yet profound.

It meets you where you are, without forcing change.

And it honours the intelligence of your nervous system.

Your Body Knows the Way

You don’t need to push, fix, or force your healing.

Your body already holds the blueprint.

Sometimes, it simply needs the right environment to release what has been held—and to restore balance from within.
